Deflation by: McKenzie Bliss
An illustrated and designed page to highlight a poem.
In Fall 2023 the "Outlet BYUI Literary and Art Journal" publication needed to be created. As a part of the team that worked on creating designs for each writing piece, I had the oppurtunity to create this design. This poem is about the writer's personal experience with her family. While the poem is short, it expresses a lot of deep hidden emotion. The color palette is of somber colors that communicates a longing and sad feeling. Even though a "Get Well Soon!" balloon is normally a happy presence, creating it in a depressing light mimics the emotions from the poem. With the title "Deflation" and details of a balloon in the poem, the illustration brings that image to life. The placement of the typography brings an effective balance to the composition. While the title is handwritten and not a font, it adds to the uniqueness and imperfect quality of human emotion.
